Adidas, in collaboration with avant-garde fashion brand AVAVAV, has launched a controversial new design that has both shocked and divided sneaker enthusiasts. The $250 kicks, part of AVAVAV’s 2025 collection, made their debut at Milan Fashion Week and feature the iconic Superstar sneakers with a twist: detachable rubber toes, referred to as “Superfingers.”
These unusual appendages are a nod to the barefoot running shoes that are often considered unfashionable. The “Superfingers” mimic the look of long, rubber toes and can be detached from the sneakers, leaving behind a more traditional Superstar design.
While some fans with an acquired taste have praised the quirky design, others have mocked the footwear, calling it “ugly,” “alien-like,” and even “cursed.” On social media, disappointed followers have expressed their frustration, with one writing, “What’s wrong with making regular s–t?” and another commenting, “If you call this fashion, you need some therapy.”
However, Adidas and AVAVAV defend the design, with Adidas explaining that the four-toe motif aligns with AVAVAV’s brand aesthetic, which is visible in its gloves, hats, and boots. The design is a playful reference to the avant-garde brand’s “four-finger” motif, also seen in Maison Margiela’s Tabi shoes.
Despite the backlash, some sneakerheads are still interested in the unique look, and certain sizes have already sold out online. AVAVAV’s creative director, Beate Karlsson, admitted the collaboration was meant to have fun with the fashion world’s seriousness. “From the beginning of our partnership, I was encouraged to ‘make fun’ of Adidas,” she said. “It’s been incredibly fun to explore the irony between sports and fashion.”
Known for its experimental approach to street style, AVAVAV is no stranger to bold and theatrical presentations, such as encouraging audiences to throw trash at models or having models purposefully fall on the runway.
Whether you love it or hate it, this collaboration has certainly made waves in the fashion world.
