In Bangkok, street food often steals the spotlight, but the city’s fine dining scene has grown remarkably in recent years, offering food enthusiasts even more reasons to visit. Notably, two of its venues earned spots on the 2019 World’s Best Restaurant list, and the Michelin Guide, introduced to the city in 2017, has awarded stars to 26 Bangkok establishments and one in Phuket.
Now, Bangkok’s culinary landscape has reached new heights with the opening of Mahanakhon Bangkok SkyBar, Thailand’s highest restaurant and bar.
Located on the 76th and 77th floors of the iconic King Power Mahanakhon skyscraper, which stands 314 meters (1,030 feet) tall, SkyBar combines breathtaking views with exceptional cuisine. Helmed by American executive chef Joshua Cameron, formerly of New York’s renowned Eleven Madison Park, the menu is a creative blend of Western and Asian dishes. Highlights include Andaman sea bass with Thai nahm jim emulsion, Hokkaido uni panna cotta, and Australian 48-hour short ribs. Pair these delicacies with a selection of classic cocktails or choose from over 100 wines.
The design, led by Tristan Auer and Wilson Associates, merges French elegance with Thai-inspired motifs. The outdoor dining area, enclosed in glass, features an “urban jungle” theme, surrounding diners with lush greenery and offering a unique “forest in the sky” experience.
SkyWalk Perks
Dining at SkyBar also includes access to the Mahanakhon SkyWalk, located two floors above. This 314-meter-high observation deck, Thailand’s tallest, offers 360-degree views of Bangkok and features a thrilling glass floor extending over the edge of the building. Visitors must wear protective booties before stepping onto this striking platform.
Architectural Marvel
Mahanakhon is a mixed-use development and one of Bangkok’s most eye-catching buildings. Its pixelated design creates a cascading effect, achieved through “sky boxes” built into its structure. Completed in 2016, the skyscraper briefly held the title of Thailand’s tallest building until 2018.
The first 18 floors will soon host an Orient Express hotel, while floors 23 to 73 house the Ritz-Carlton Residences, offering luxurious penthouse options. The upper levels (74-78) are dedicated to the observatory, restaurant, and bar, cementing King Power Mahanakhon as a must-visit destination for travelers seeking extraordinary dining and panoramic views.
