For over 120 years, Matild Palace has stood as an iconic landmark in Budapest, welcoming visitors crossing the Danube River via the Elisabeth Bridge, which connects the city’s two halves—Buda and Pest.

A Legacy of Grandeur

Built in 1902 during the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s peak, Matild Palace symbolized strength and prosperity. It quickly became a hub for Europe’s elite, drawing royalty, dignitaries, and celebrities to its lavish interiors and famed café culture. With intricate Zsolnay ceramics, stained glass by Miksa Róth, and cutting-edge architectural techniques, the palace was a marvel of its time. It even housed Hungary’s first elevator, installed by Otis Elevator Company.

Despite surviving two world wars and a brief renaissance in the 1950s, the palace fell into decline under communist rule. Its former elegance faded as it was repurposed for various functions, including a student canteen and nightclub. Yet, Matild Palace’s resilience endured, earning UNESCO protection in 1977.

Restoration and Revival

Following a meticulous $80 million transformation led by renowned designers and architects, Matild Palace reopened in 2021 as a luxurious five-star hotel under Marriott’s Luxury Collection. The renovation honored the palace’s historical integrity, restoring its Belle Époque elegance while integrating modern amenities. The hotel now features 130 rooms, including the opulent Maria Klotild Royal Suite, complete with chandeliers, bespoke furniture, and gilded bathrooms.

Cultural Hub and Café Revival

The Matild Café & Cabaret, a centerpiece of the palace, has been reimagined as a vibrant yet sophisticated venue. It celebrates Budapest’s legendary café culture with historical artifacts and performances on a hydraulic stage discovered during renovations. Outside, a statue of Hungarian writer Gyula Krúdy honors the café’s artistic legacy.

Modern-Day Attractions

Spago by Wolfgang Puck introduces contemporary Hungarian cuisine blended with Californian flair, while The Duchess, a hidden rooftop liquor library, offers stunning city views. Guests can also indulge in traditional Turkish-Hungarian therapies at the boutique Swan Spa.
